Homeland Security reported Friday that it has completed the processing and release into American communities of some more than 50,000 Afghan refugees over the previous four months while also closing another camp established at military locations to accommodate the Afghans.

A third military post, Fort Bliss in Texas, has also been cleared of refugees. Additional Afghans, numbering around 22,500, are still dispersed throughout five different locations in Indiana and New Jersey, as well as New Mexico and Virginia.

A last-ditch humanitarian attempt by the Biden administration transported more than 75,000 Afghans to the United States in the airlift, named Operation Allies Welcome. After the conclusion of the 20-year war effort on Aug. 31, aid was sought for Afghans who had assisted the United States throughout that time.

Nearly 500 of them are discharged each day after being processed at the bases.

It’s been a great four months for Operation Allies Welcome owing to the hard work of our staff and the support we’ve gotten from veterans, religion groups, non-governmental organizations, and Americans around the nation,” said Robert J. Fenton, Jr.

There are a large number of persons brought out who are not qualified for the special visa for those who assisted in the war effort.

They were allowed to enter the country under the parole powers of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, bypassing the customary security measures including in-person interviews done by US Citizenship and Immigration Services specialists.

Republicans on Capitol Hill have been outraged by the security failings, but the resettlement process continues at a rapid pace.

A total of eight military locations in the United States housed Afghan refugees, where they were screened and vaccinated before being placed in temporary housing.
